Home and school are both vital in the development of a facility with language. Studies reveal that children gain most of their vocabulary and language knowledge in a home setting via sibling and caregiver interactions. School is where code-related knowledge, focused on phonemic awareness and reading simple words and sentences, is emphasized. These two settings are not mutually exclusive. A parent might have a four-year-old complete a task while shopping, identifying and sounding out signs associated with food items. The teacher might organize a rhyming or flashcard activity that similarly promotes phonemic awareness but within a classroom setting. It’s essential to remember as a parent that literacy development is accelerated through consistent reinforcement and practice within the home environment. Integrate activities such as rhyming and reading and communicate through words about everyday actions to develop a love of words and language.
